Symptoms: High job satisfaction
This is the "in love with the job" honeymoon phase. The employee is experiencing high job satisfaction, commitment, energy, and creativity. However, they may begin to experience predicted stresses of doing the work, which is the first burnout phase.
Symptoms: Intensified stress
In the stress onset phase, the predicted stressors begin to intensify, showing as fatigue, anxiety, irritability, lack of focus, and decreased productivity.
Symptoms: Poor performance
In the chronic stress phase, the employee is experiencing frequent stress, anger, resentfulness, chronic fatigue, and poor performance.
Symptoms: Physical pain
During the burnout phase, it is at the critical point when the employee can no longer cope. They have developed a pessimistic outlook on work and life, increased self-doubt, social isolation, headaches, and stomach pains.
Symptoms: Chronic depression
In the habitual burnout stage, the employee has spiraled into significant mental, physical, or emotional problems, experiencing chronic depression and exhaustion.
